Sweet and Fortified Wines

Sweet and fortified wines are an exquisite choice for those who appreciate rich flavours that are pleasant on the palate. These wines are distinguished by their high sugar content, which can be achieved in various ways, including the addition of alcohol to the must or the preservation of residual sugars after fermentation. Their flavour profile ranges from fruity and floral notes to nuances of dried fruit and spices, giving them unique complexity and versatility. They are ideal as aperitifs, for pairing with desserts or even as an accompaniment to selected cheeses, adding a touch of sophistication to any special occasion.

In the vast world of winemaking, there are various types of sweet and fortified wines, each with its own unique characteristics and flavour profiles. In the Spanish context, three categories stand out in particular: Muscat wines, Malvasia wines and Pedro Ximénez. Muscat wines are characterised by floral and fruity flavours, often with hints of raisins. Malvasia wines, on the other hand, display elegant complexity with nuances of ripe fruit and dried fruit. Finally, Pedro Ximénez wines are known for their density and richness, with intense notes of figs, dates and caramel. Each of these sweet and fortified wines brings its own charm to the wine experience.

Among sweet wines, Muscat wines are recognised for their distinctive floral aroma and fruity notes. Made from Muscat grapes, these wines are a delight for those seeking sweet and appealing flavours. What makes them particularly attractive is their balance between sweetness and acidity, allowing them to pair with a wide variety of desserts or to be enjoyed as an aperitif in their own right. The versatility and flavour intensity of Muscat wines make them a delightful choice for any wine lover seeking an experience full of sweetness and charm.

Among sweet wines, Malvasia wines are known for their aromatic character and gentle sweetness. Made from Malvasia grapes, these wines offer a wide range of styles and flavour profiles, from drier to sweeter varieties. Their versatility makes them ideal for accompanying savoury dishes such as cheeses or appetisers, while they are also a delightful choice for pairing with desserts. The flexibility of sweet Malvasia wines, both in terms of sweetness and food pairing, makes them a fascinating and delicious option for those seeking a unique wine experience.

Finally, Pedro Ximénez sweet wines stand out for their intensity and complexity. Made from Pedro Ximénez grapes, they are characterised by their deep flavour of raisins, figs and toasted nuances. These fortified wines are perfect to enjoy on their own as a dessert or to pair with dark chocolate and blue cheeses. Their richness of flavour and persistence on the palate make Pedro Ximénez wines a sophisticated and pleasurable choice for those seeking a unique wine experience. Their sweetness and intensely flavoursome character make them a true delight for the senses.

Muscat wines are known for their fruity and fresh aroma, evoking floral and citrus notes. These aromatic characteristics are due to the volatile compounds present in Muscat grapes, which are transferred to the wine during the winemaking process. When tasting a Muscat wine, fragrances of flowers such as rose, jasmine and orange blossom can be perceived, along with notes of fruits such as apricot, peach and grapefruit. The combination of these aromas makes Muscat wines sweet and perfumed, ideal for enjoying on special occasions or as a sensory gift for wine lovers.

In terms of flavour, Muscat wines are characterised by their balanced sweetness, which is not cloying. The residual sugar present in these wines provides a soft and rounded sensation on the palate, creating a pleasant experience full of nuances. They also tend to have a bright golden colour, reflecting the quality and care taken in their production. Muscat wines are the perfect choice for those seeking a sweet wine that is not only delicious but also elegant, with a rich complexity of flavours and aromas that evoke the very essence of the Muscat grape.

Muscat wines are a perfect choice to accompany desserts and mild cheeses, as their sweetness and flavour intensity enhance the flavours of these foods. They can also be enjoyed as an aperitif, offering a refreshing and aromatic experience before a meal. Malvasia

Malvasia is a very special grape variety that is widely cultivated in our country. Its origins can be traced back to the grape known as Malvasia Canaria, which has been used for centuries to produce high-quality sweet wines. These grapes are left to ripen on the vine until they reach a very high concentration of sugars, giving them their distinctive flavour and characteristic sweetness.

Wines made from Malvasia grapes are known for their powerful mineral aromas, evoking notes of wet stone and earth. These aromatic characteristics are due to the special conditions in which Malvasia is grown and the unique terroir of each wine region. When tasting a Malvasia wine, floral and fruity nuances such as peach, apricot and citrus notes can be appreciated, combining with these mineral aromas to create a unique sensory experience.

Visually, Malvasia wines are characterised by their toasted golden-yellow colour, reflecting their maturity and complexity. This warm and bright tone adds visual appeal to the glass, inviting you to taste its exquisite contents.

In addition to their distinctive flavour and aroma, Malvasia wines also stand out for their good body and structure on the palate. The presence of natural sugars gives them a soft and unctuous texture, creating a pleasant and balanced sensation on the palate.

At Vinopremier, we offer a selection of high-quality Malvasia wines from renowned wineries and wine regions. Our catalogue includes Malvasia wines that express the diversity and unique character of this grape variety. Discover the elegance and sophistication of Malvasia wines and let yourself be seduced by their captivating aromas and sweet, balanced flavour. Pedro Ximénez

Pedro Ximénez wines are recognised and valued in the wine world for their uniqueness and delicious sweet flavour. These wines take their name from the Pedro Ximénez grape, which is used exclusively in their production. Originating in Andalusia, Pedro Ximénez wines stand out for their sun-drying process, in which harvested grapes are dried in the sun, causing a very high concentration of sugars.

The result is a sweet wine with an alcohol content ranging from 8% to 15% ABV. Pedro Ximénez wines are dense and concentrated, with colours ranging from mahogany tones to dark brown. Their intensity of flavour and sweetness make them a perfect choice to accompany desserts and moments of indulgence.

Within the group of Spanish fortified wines, Pedro Ximénez wines hold a prominent place alongside other varieties such as Finos, Amontillados, Olorosos and Manzanillas. These wines are characterised by their production, ageing and storage process, which takes place in large barrels known as soleras and criaderas. The soleras contain the oldest wine, while the criaderas contain the younger wine.

At bottling, the wine from the soleras, the oldest wine, is used, and they are then topped up with younger wines from the criaderas. This technique of blending different vintages is what gives fortified wines their unique and evolving character.

In addition to Spanish fortified wines, there are other renowned examples in different countries. Portuguese fortified wines, such as Port and Madeira, French fortified wines from Marseille and the Jura, and Italian fortified wines from Santorini are appreciated and known internationally.
