What is sangria?
Sangria is a refreshing drink originally from Spain that is normally made with wine, chopped fruit, soda, sugar and in some cases some liquor is added. According to the regulations of the European Union, bleeding can only occur in Spain and Portugal but it also occurs and is widely consumed in Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela and Ecuador.
In Catalonia it is common to do it with cava and they call it: sangria de cava.
On the other hand, in Asturias, it is common to use cider, instead of wine called Sangría de Sidra.
According to the magazine Very interesting, the word sangria comes from blood, although it seems that it was the English who made this drink fashionable in the mid-nineteenth century.
How is sangria made?
We look for the container with the appropriate size according to the amount of sangria that we want to make. The traditional recipe for sangria is red wine, although practically any wine can be used, the most suitable is a fruity young red wine. It does not matter if a high-grade wine is used, as it will be lowered with soda. It is convenient that you have many tannins, as they will also be discounted. From Vinopremier we recommend using a 14% vol young Toro wine for the elaboration of your sangria. or more.
Sugar is added to taste, for the preparation of a good sangria it is convenient to add the sugar in the form of syrup so that it is mixed evenly, although normal white sugar can be used. It can be added to taste but without going over since it should NOT be an excessively sweet drink.
Add lemon and orange juice in the desired amount, unlike the other fruits only the juice will be added and no pieces of lemon and orange will be added.
Other fruits. It is best to use seasonal aromatic fruits. They should be fleshy fruits such as peach or peach, apricot, pear, apple or even banana. Unlike lemon and orange, they are chopped but not squeezed and left macerating for a couple of hours, so that the maceration is effective.
Spices. Branch cinnamon is usually used, but other spices may be used depending on taste.
Soda. Since the fruit has to macerate a couple of hours to contribute its flavor well, if it is desired that the sangria contains carbonic gas, it is convenient to add the soda just before its consumption, so that the gas does not disappear. You can also use orange or lemon soda (type Fanta or Sprite).
Give a touch with Vermouth and other spirits. If desired, you can add a splash of red vermouth, brandy, triple dry or other liquors such as gin, which will turn the sangria into a high-grade drink but with the feeling of drinking a soft drink.
