Wine Garnacha de Hielo from Proyecto Garnachas, presents this Ice Wine (Spain), made from the 100% Garnacha grape variety. A delicious rarity.
Garnacha de Hielo is one of the few ice wines produced in Spain. It comes from the vineyards that the Acha family has in Cárdenas, harvested at the end of December with temperatures between five and ten degrees below zero. At this time of year, the grapes have maximum concentration and the result is a sweet wine of very exclusive production.
Aging: 18 months in barrels.
Harvest: The vineyard was harvested on January 3, 2015, between 7 and 8 in the morning, with a temperature of 5.5 degrees below zero, after temperatures below 7 had been reached in the previous two weeks. Under zero grades.
Vineyard: Old vineyards more than a century old located on ferrous clay soil at about 600 meters above sea level.
Raúl Acha, The origin
The 'Spanish Garnacha Project' is a journey through the history of Garnacha through the eyes of Raúl Acha, Vintae winemaker and passionate defender of the variety. His journey begins within his family, Cárdenas (La Rioja), where his great-grandfather planted Garnacha vineyards more than a hundred years ago.
To demonstrate its importance, Raúl decides to look for similar cases of old Garnacha vineyards on a tour of the Ebro basin. On his way he will find some of the vineyards that best reflect the essence of this variety and he will start a conversation with different winegrowers who will tell him about the local history of Garnacha and its evolution.
«The result of this adventure is a collection of single-varietal wines»
The Grenache
Garnacha was the first red variety in number of hectares planted in Spain for many years. Although it once had between 100,000 and 120,000 hectares, the figure was reduced to the current 70,000.
