Viura, Macabeo, Alcañol, Blanca de Daroca, Forcalla, Gredelín, Perpiñán... are some of the different names for the same variety. A variety that stands as one of the most respected, and with the greatest potential in Spain, and the undisputed protagonist of the Catalan and Rioja vineyards. It presents an excellent adaptation to various types of soil and climatic conditions, also offering a fairly high performance. Its cluster is compact, large in size with medium-thick grapes and colorless juice, balanced in sugar and body. Its aromas are similar to Palomino, but this grape has more color and more body giving the wines that meloromantic touch depending on the fermentation time. It produces wine with a delicate aroma and pale straw yellow color with green tones. The origins of this variety, although not entirely clear, seem to be found in the Ebro River basin. La Viura, or Macabeo, offers wines of notable acidity. Extraordinarily fresh wines when young, and very suitable for aging both in bottle and in oak barrels. Precisely this great aging capacity would be responsible for the fact that the Viura has become essential in Rioja, the birthplace of long aging in barrels, as well as in Catalonia, where the Macabeo provides structure so that the Cavas can age for years without lose freshness.
