The Gran Canaria Designation of Origin is based in the province of Gran Canaria and was established. in 2009, with about 230 hectares of vineyards and about 55 wineries that make up 400 winegrowers.
The preferred and authorized white varieties in this D.O. They are Albillo, Bermejuela, Forastera, Gual, Malvasia, Moscatel, Sabro, Verdello, Vijariego, Baboso Bl, Breval, Burrablanca, Listan blanco, P.X and Torrontes.
The preferred and authorized red varieties in this D.O are Castellana negra, Listan negro, Malvasia rosada, Negramoll, Tintilla, Baboso Negro, Cab. Sauvignon, Listan prieto, Moscatel negro and Vijariego Negro.
The wines of this D.O. Starting in the 16th century, the most famous of the wines exported from the Canary Islands was known as malvasía or simply vino de Canarias.
Currently, a much more extensive range of wines is produced on the island, within the Gran Canaria Designation of Origin. The most widespread varieties are the common black, negramoll, tintilla, black muscatel, malvasía and Listan.
The D.O. Gran Canaria includes up to twelve commercial brands that produce young, red and white wines. These magnificent wines have already conquered the local market and their fame continues to expand.
The minimum percentages of alcoholic volume acquired in their wines are the following: White 10%, Rosé 10%, Red 11%, Classic Sweet 14%, Liqueur Wine 15%, Sparkling 10%.
