Buy Wines from the Canary Islands

The Abona Designation of Origin is based in the province of Tenerife and was established in 1996, with about 1,100 hectares of vineyards and about 17 wineries that make up 1,360 winegrowers. Generally the soil is of high quality but low yield. There are areas of volcanic ash and in the lower area of the valleys you can find clay, some limestone and marl. The climate is the so-called Canarian subtropical at sea level, with countless variations depending on the altitude, where there are mild and constant temperatures for much of the year in the coastal area.

The preferred and authorized white varieties in this D.O. Bermejuela, Moscatel, Malvasía, Gual, Verdello, Forastera, Bastardo, Listan Blanco, P. Ximenez, Sabro, Torrontés and Vijariego. The preferred and authorized red varieties in this D.O are Bastardo Negro, Listán negro, Negramoll, Malvasía rosada, Cab. Sauvignon, Castellana negra, Merlot, Moscatel negro, Pinot Noir, Ruby Cab, Syrah, Tempranillo, Tintilla and Vijariego Negro.

The wines of this D.O. contain a characteristic that makes wine production unique in this corner of the planet is its type of "glass" cultivation on black volcanic sands called jables, which protect and provide the ideal amount of humidity to the plant. This type of cultivation technique can be observed from 600 meters above sea level. White wines with body, structure and fruit are more produced than red wines that may be in the background.

The minimum percentages of alcoholic volume acquired in their wines are the following: Young white 9.5%, Rosé 11%, Red 11.5%, Classic sweets 15%, Sparkling 9.5%, Carbonated sparkling wine 9, 5%, Liquor 15%.
