Red Wine The Marqués de Riscal Reserva XR from Bodegas Marqués de Riscal presents this red wine from the D.O.Ca. Rioja, made from grape varieties 91% Tempranillo and 9% Graciano.

In Marqués de Riscal, within its Historical Reserve, there were wineries such as Reserva Medoc and XR without becoming commercial names. In the style of Jerez foremen, the winemaker marked some of his barrels with chalk with the word XR (Extra Reserva) having found some special characteristics that were not found in others. This XR was never marketed, but it was always a reference for the cellar master. This custom lasted almost a century, between the harvests of 1869 and 1964.

The XR 2015, its first vintage, is a tribute to all the cellar masters who, from Jean Pineau to the present day, have contributed to forging part of the best history of Spanish wine in Marqués de Riscal.

Aging: 26 months in American oak barrels.

Optimum service temperature: Between 16 and 18ºC.

Marqués de Riscal Wineries

The history of Bodegas Marqués de Riscal is the story of an innovative, pioneering and benchmark company in a wine sector in continuous transformation.

The winery was founded in 1858 by Guillermo Hurtado de Amézaga. In 1862 their first wines were bottled, which thus became the oldest bottled wines of Rioja.

A few years after its foundation, the winery quickly began to win numerous awards, but one of the most important came in 1895, when Marqués de Riscal became the first non-French wine to receive the Diploma of Honor at the Bordeaux Exhibition.

In 1972 Marqués de Riscal began the production of the first white wines from Rueda and, in recent years, the winery has dared to incorporate two new appellations into the project, V.T. Castilla y León and D.O. Getariako Txakolina.

For those who want to trace the history of the winery from its foundation to the present day with the possibility of enjoying Marqués de Riscal wines, in 2006 the City of Wine was inaugurated, which today has a hotel designed by the famous Canadian architect Frank O. Gehry.
